Toka Leya
Upstream of Victoria Falls and overlooking islands in the Zambezi, Toka Leya is situated in Zambia’s Mosi- oa-Tunya National Park
Toka Leya is a success story in rehabilitation having rescued a degraded area and restored it to a lush riverine forest.
The lodge stretches out along the Zambezi riverbank, with communal space in the centre. A wooden walkway links all rooms and areas, and each room is airy with toiletries, fans and expansive decks. Toka Leya is family-friendly taking children over six years old and with three family rooms. A spa is on-site, offering massages and other beauty treatments at an additional cost.
The camp overlooks the Zambezi River where hippo, crocodile and elephant flourish, and there is an incredible diversity of birdlife. With a great location in the Mosi-oa-Tunya Park which hosts species such as buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and white rhino, game viewing drives are rewarding. The occasional predator is spotted, as are several sought-after bird species including African finfoot, half-collared kingfisher, African skimmer (seasonal), Schalow’s turaco and rock pratincole (seasonal).
Victoria Falls is within easy reach of camp – highly recommended for at least a day’s excursion.
Facilities
Toka Leya has a spacious main communal area with gorgeous views up and down the river. A large airy, dining room and multiple comfortable sitting areas provide of positions to enjoy the view. An atmospheric bar overlooks the river, while a swimming pool is located right on the riverside. Walkways and decks link the spaces with a reception, guest toilet, shop and library.
The camp has twelve accommodation units. There are six twin-bedded canvas tents, each with two three quarter beds; three double-bedded canvas tents each equipped with a king-size bed; three family canvas tented rooms (main bedroom with one king-size bed; second bedroom with two three quarter beds). Each family room consists of two bedrooms, sharing the same bathroom and entrance.
Local Wildlife
Hippos often come up to graze within camp. bushbuck and other antelope are regular visitors
Cruises are the ideal means for accessing elephants and other wildlife plus a dazzling array of birds on the shores of the Zambezi
Birding specials include African finfoot and seasonal migrants like the African skimmer.
Optional Activities
A trip to view Victoria Falls is a standard feature on any stay in Livingstone.
A small gym in camp faces the river, as does a spa offering a variety of treatments
Embrace local culture with a tour to nearby Livingstone or to a village, school, or market
Bungee jumping, white-water rafting, helicoptering and other thrills are easily available from Livingstone (only 15 minutes from camp).
Catch-and-release fishing is seasonally available. A professional ghillie with appropriate tackle should be arranged in advance.
