Rufiji River Camp

Scroll

Rufiji River Camp is an unpretentious, comfortable lodge situated on the banks of the mighty Rufiji River in the superb Selous Game Reserve offering large, palm-shaded tents and stunning views over the river.

The midrange camp was refurbished in 2009 to a high standard and the guiding here is regarded as some of the best in the reserve. Each of the 14 Classic Tents is smartly decorated with two queen beds, private bathrooms, mosquito nets and a large verandah with excellent views over the river, home to hippos and other wildlife. There are also three Suites, each with two tents, perfect for families or groups of friends.

The camp also benefits from a covered swimming pool, restaurant, bar, small library and lounge housed within a large communal roundhouse.

At nearly four times the size of the Serengeti, the Selous is the largest reserve in Tanzania and is composed of a vast unspoilt network of rivers, lakes, woodland and savannah. The reserve is home to the rare African wild dog (estimated at 4000 animals – half the entire African population) as well as large populations of elephant, hippo, giraffe, zebra, antelope and buffalo. There is a large lion population and the terrain is particularly suited to leopards, which are thought to exist in even greater numbers than the lions (although they are seen less often). As well as the big game, the reserve hosts a multitude of smaller animals, insects and over 350 species of birds. Small boats and open-sided jeeps are used to explore the reserve and walking safaris are provided to complete the wildlife experience.
