Katavi Wildlife Camp
Katavi Wildlife Camp is a small and exclusive lodge of just eight tents in the remote Katavi National Park. Accommodation is in eight large well-furnished tents complete with king-size beds, private bathroom, writing desk and a large covered verandah. There is hot water available but it is solar powered and usually only available at the end of the day. The tents enjoy a shady position on the edge of a large floodplain that attracts plenty of wildlife. At the front of each tent is a private verandah with chairs and a hammock to enjoy the view of the plains with. Each tent has an electronic safety deposit box and power supply for recharging equipment and laundry service is complimentary.
Excursions are a mixture of game drives in open-sided 4x4s and walking tours. Meals are taken in the main dining room with an a la carte menu for breakfast and dinner and a buffet for lunch. There is also a well-stocked bar and open lounge in which to relax.
Remote and wild, Katavi covers 4,500 sq km, making it Tanzania’s third largest park. It sits on a watery flood plain that includes vast areas of miombo and acacia woodland, rivers, swamps, palm groves and shallow lakes. There is a high concentration of hippo, crocodile, buffalo, impala, eland, topi and zebra, while lion and leopard are never far away.

Local Wildlife
Large herds of buffalo and other herbivores are commonplace even around the camp and the park supports a particularly large zebra population. Other common species include topi, hartebeest, eland, waterbuck, impala, southern and bohor reedbuck, giraffe and warthog, and the rare roan antelope still persists here. The park’s waterways also support large densities of hippo and crocodile. Carnivores are well represented too with lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, spotted hyena, caracal, serval and African wild cat. The bird, reptile and insect diversity is also very impressive.

Being well off the beaten track, the lodge gets relatively few visitors. This is particularly so in the rainy season months (November to May) when you may be the only guests in the lodge. In fact, there’s a good chance that you might be the only tourists in the whole national park. Bring a sense of adventure (plus a good book) and you will be rewarded with a truly wild African experience and vivid, lifelong memories.
