Southern Zambia
Chongwe River Camp
Nestled in a grove of winterthorn trees, Chongwe River Camp is set on the banks of lower Zambezi River.
Lower Zambezi region is best known as the home to the Lower Zambezi National Park which features exceptional, undeveloped wildlife areas. It is renowned for its abundant game – hippos, buffalo, crocodiles, fish eagles, and herds of elephants can be spotted, among other species. The landscape is characterised by rugged, unspoilt wilderness of vast floodplains, scattered with indigenous woodlands. Visitors can look forward to an array of wonderful activities along the Zambezi including game drives, walking safaris, canoe trips, and excellent tiger fishing.
Something about the Lower Zambezi River is simply wonderful. The sunrise and sunsets glow pink against the purple escarpment; the animals wander freely through the camp. It’s not unusual to lie in bed and watch an elephant swim across the river just in front of your room. Chongwe River Camp is set at the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi River’s, with views in both directions.
The camp is seasonal and opens between 15 April and 15 November.
Apart from the 9 safari tents in the main camp, there are also the spacious Albida and Cassia Suites which have their own sitting and dining areas plus a small plunge pool. For small groups of friends or family, there is the private Chongwe House, with its own staff and guide.
There is a wide variety of activities on offer from the camp including day and night drives, walking, boating and sleeping out under the stars. Power in camp is driven by a generator, and there is limited Wi-Fi in the communal sitting area.
Minimum age of 7 years due to the wild animals that wander freely through the camp. Getting into camp is usually by scheduled charter flights from Lusaka and then by a 15 minute road transfer into camp.

Apart from the beauty of the rivers and escarpment, this area is renowned for its excellent wildlife. On any of the many activities available, it’s not unusual to encounter numerous herds of elephant in the river, on the banks and within the national park. Canoeing and boating are an excellent way to see wildlife from a different viewpoint. In the early part of the season, April, wild dog roam in the area surrounding the camp.
Combine a visit to Chongwe River Camp with the South Luangwa National Park and enjoy two of the most significant rivers in Southern Africa.
